Metal Roof Ice Dam Removal
Professional steam removal for ice dams on metal roofs, including steep roof slopes and roofing systems that require special access or careful temperature control.
Metal roofing can shed snow differently from asphalt shingles, but it is not immune to ice dams. Ice can form at cold eaves, around gutters, at roof transitions, and where drainage becomes obstructed.
Ice Dam USA has experience completing difficult steep-metal-roof projects. We use Arctic Steamers and select access methods based on the roofing material, ice location, and working conditions.

Can metal roofs develop ice dams?
Yes. Metal does not prevent the basic process that creates an ice dam: snow or ice melts on a warmer section of roof, runoff reaches a colder surface, and the water refreezes where drainage is restricted.
A metal roof may shed snow efficiently under some conditions, but snow guards, valleys, shallow sections, lower roof transitions, and cold eaves can hold or concentrate snow and ice. The roof's design and heat movement matter more than the material alone.
Standing-seam roofs
Raised seams, roof transitions, and snow-retention components require attention when identifying areas of ice buildup.
Exposed-fastener roofs
Fasteners, washers, surface coatings, and existing penetrations must be considered when choosing a removal approach.
Copper and specialty metal
Delicate surfaces, finishes, and difficult roof slopes may require technicians to work from a ladder or specialized lift instead of walking on the roof.
Why Ice Dam USA uses adjustable steam on metal roofs
Mechanical chopping or prying can damage panels, coatings, flashing, seams, and roof accessories. Aggressive high-pressure washing introduces other concerns around roofing joints and penetrations.
Professional steam relies on heat to melt ice. Ice Dam USA's Arctic Steamers can produce temperatures up to 304°F at the machine. Steam temperature can be lowered when a roof requires additional caution. Lower temperatures may increase the time required to remove heavy ice.
Steam loses some heat while traveling through hose, so the temperature at the wand can differ from the machine's maximum. Each truck carries approximately 500 feet of hose, with additional lengths available when needed.
How we access metal roofs that cannot safely be walked on
Metal roofs can be exceptionally slippery in winter, and large pieces of snow or ice can shift with little warning. Our technicians do not assume that a roof is walkable because it is structurally sound.
For difficult or sensitive surfaces such as copper, Ice Dam USA may work from ladders or a specialized Spider lift. Other projects may require a boom truck or a rented lift selected for that building. Suitable roof hatches or other approved roof access may be used when available.
The work area below is also important. Falling ice can threaten people, windows, patio furniture, outdoor fixtures, vehicles, and landscaping. On a previous challenging job near numerous windows, our crew used protective boards and controlled the size of ice pieces being removed to help protect the area below.
Factors we evaluate
- Metal roof profile, slope, and surface condition
- Presence of snow guards, heat cables, and roof accessories
- Location and thickness of ice
- Roof access and possible equipment rental
- Areas below where ice could fall
- Weather, temperature, and crew exposure
Why we prefer removing the affected ice instead of leaving it behind
Cutting a narrow drainage path can provide temporary relief, especially during an active leak. However, substantial ice left around the same roof section can continue obstructing runoff as conditions change.
Ice Dam USA normally aims to remove all ice within the affected work area. Snow above the ice is removed as necessary to expose the buildup and carry out the work. This is different from full-roof snow removal, which is not automatically part of ice dam service.
Where insurance authorizes only a limited removal scope, work may be restricted to the areas agreed upon with the customer.
Does insurance cover metal roof ice dam damage?
Insurance may cover certain water damage caused by ice dams and may cover removal in some circumstances. Coverage is determined by the actual policy, the circumstances, and the insurer's decision.
Ice Dam USA has worked on insurance-related removal projects, including instances where the carrier authorized broader ice removal. That does not mean another policy will cover the same work.
Always check with your insurance company first. Policy terms, exclusions, deductibles, and conditions vary and can change. Ice Dam USA takes before, during, and after photographs of the removal process and supplies them to the customer.
What should a metal roof owner do before the truck arrives?
Provide power and water
Have an accessible, functional 110V outlet and water spigot ready when technicians arrive.
Move personal property
Clear grills, planters, patio furniture, and other movable items from areas below the removal zone.
Share roof information
Tell us the metal type, roof pitch, access restrictions, snow-retention equipment, and areas of active leaking.
The customer does not usually need to be indoors during work. A contract must be signed before arrival, and payment must be arranged before work when the owner is not on-site.
Job duration cannot be estimated reliably from photographs because ice may extend much farther up the roof than is visible. Temperature also affects productivity. Billable time begins upon arrival, and a three-hour minimum applies. Current rates are published on our pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Are metal roofs immune to ice dams?
No. Metal roofs can develop ice dams where meltwater refreezes and blocks normal drainage, particularly at cold eaves and transitions.
Can steam remove ice from a standing-seam metal roof?
Controlled steam can be used for suitable metal roof ice removal. The actual roof system, seams, coatings, existing condition, and access require evaluation.
Does steam damage metal roofing?
Heat and operator technique matter. Ice Dam USA adjusts steam temperature and takes roof material into account, but no process can guarantee zero risk for every roof or coating.
Do you work on copper roofs?
Yes, with additional caution when appropriate. Copper roofs may require removal from ladders or specialized lifts rather than walking on the roofing.
Can you remove ice on steep metal roofs?
Ice Dam USA has completed challenging steep-metal-roof projects. Specialized access equipment may be necessary, depending on the site.
What about snow guards and heat cables?
They are considered during the site evaluation. These accessories can affect where snow and ice collect, and they should not be damaged or altered without an appropriate plan.
Will you remove snow from the entire roof?
No. Our standard ice dam work removes snow as needed around the affected ice buildup rather than automatically clearing the entire roof.
Can you respond to an active leak overnight?
Ice Dam USA accepts calls 24/7. Overnight service may focus on addressing the leak-causing ice obstruction, with remaining removal scheduled later.
Will homeowners insurance pay?
Coverage varies. Contact your insurer before assuming roof ice removal or water damage is covered. We can provide photographs of completed work.
