Ice Dam USA / Public Facility Roof Ice Removal

Government Building Ice Dam Removal

Professional steam ice dam removal for municipal buildings, public facilities, and government-managed properties experiencing roof ice buildup, frozen drainage, or winter water intrusion.

Public buildings often have entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and occupied facilities that require additional attention during overhead ice removal.

Ice Dam USA's second-generation ice removal experience dates to 1992. Our technicians are trained for larger and more complex buildings, and our professional Arctic Steamers use controlled low-pressure steam to address suitable roof ice obstructions.

Public Building Winter Hazards

Why roof ice demands attention at public facilities

Municipal and government-managed properties can contain flat and pitched roofs, roof drains, scuppers, gutters, parapets, and complicated transitions. Ice buildup may obstruct drainage and contribute to water intrusion.

Heavy ice can also accumulate over entrances, loading areas, sidewalks, and other places used by employees and the public.

Municipal offices

Ice dams and frozen drainage may affect building interiors, office operations, and visitor entrances.

Libraries and civic facilities

Roof ice above pedestrian areas requires planning around public access and overhead hazards.

Public service buildings

Facilities may have mechanical roof equipment, multiple roof levels, and special access requirements.

Public safety: Keep people away from dangerous falling ice, wet electrical hazards, and any ceiling showing signs of structural distress. Site management should restrict affected areas and seek appropriate emergency assistance when needed.
Large Building Capabilities

Equipment and access for substantial public buildings

Ice Dam USA has serviced a six-story building with a pitched roof and a ten-story flat-roof building, using roof access. Our technicians assess new projects based on their specific roof layout, accessibility, materials, and working conditions.

Suitable roof access, hatches, ladders, boom equipment, or rented specialized lifts may be used depending on the job. Each truck carries approximately 500 feet of steamer hose, with additional hose available when required.

Roof height is only one consideration. Access over occupied public areas, equipment placement, drainage, and technician safety all influence whether a project can proceed.

Steam Ice Removal

Why we use Arctic Steamers for public facility roof ice

Arctic Steamers allow professional technicians to work through suitable ice buildup using heat instead of aggressive chopping or high-pressure water.

Our machines can produce up to 304°F at the machine, with lower settings available when necessary. Temperature may decrease through the hose, and lower temperatures can increase removal time.

The removal method must still account for existing roofing condition, membranes, flashing, surface finishes, and manufacturer requirements. Flat commercial roofs can present different drainage challenges from pitched roofs.

Ice Dam USA normally prefers complete removal of affected ice so substantial frozen obstructions are not left behind. Snow is cleared where necessary to reach that ice. We do not automatically clear an entire public facility roof as part of ice dam removal.

Facility Management and Public Access

Planning ice dam removal around building operations

A government building may have accessible entrances, sidewalks, public parking, restricted areas, and scheduled activities that affect how exterior work is coordinated.

Before arrival, the authorized facility contact should identify where ice is located, which areas may need temporary restrictions, and what equipment or access arrangements are available.

Helpful site information

  • Exact facility address and authorized point of contact
  • Number of stories, roof system, and roof-access method
  • Photographs of affected roof areas taken safely
  • Areas where people or vehicles pass beneath the ice
  • Applicable site access or safety procedures
  • Working 110V outlet and accessible water spigot
  • Any required vendor documentation or contract conditions

Crews generally do not need access to occupied interior rooms, although roof access through the building may need to be coordinated. Before-and-after documentation is provided when work is completed.

Government Procurement

What should a municipal facility confirm before booking?

Public agencies sometimes require purchase orders, bidding, vendor registration, specific insurance limits, background checks, or other procedures before authorizing work.

Ice Dam USA can provide available liability insurance, workers' compensation, and bonding documentation when requested. Additional procurement requirements must be reviewed for the particular project before work is accepted.

Do not assume an emergency call overrides your agency's purchasing rules or that Ice Dam USA holds a particular government registration or certification. Confirm those requirements directly when contacting our team.

A signed service agreement is required before arrival, and applicable payment arrangements must be completed before work begins when the owner or authorized paying representative will not be present.

Emergency Service and Insurance

Active leaks at government-managed buildings

Water entering a public facility can affect occupied rooms, equipment, stored materials, and building operations. Ice Dam USA accepts emergency service calls 24/7 and can dispatch crews overnight when available and safe to do so.

Overnight removal focuses on addressing the ice obstruction contributing to an active leak. More extensive removal may be scheduled separately. Repairs to roofing materials and interior water damage are outside the ice removal scope.

Property insurance or risk-management coverage may apply to certain damage and removal costs, but terms vary. The responsible agency should confirm coverage and authorization before assuming reimbursement.

Rates and Preparation

How public facility ice dam removal is scheduled

Ice Dam USA assesses a job from photographs and property details but does not issue estimates of the total time required. Actual ice thickness, roof height, access, temperature, and working conditions affect duration.

The service agreement must be signed before arrival. Time begins when the truck arrives, and an accessible 110V outlet and water supply must already be available. Movable property below affected areas should be cleared.

All jobs have a three-hour minimum. Current rates and service conditions are available on the Ice Dam USA pricing page.

Our crews commonly postpone work below approximately 10°F when cold, wind, and blowing steam create unsafe exposure. Other worksite or weather hazards can also affect scheduling.

Government Facility FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Ice Dam USA accept government building projects?

Ice Dam USA accepts inquiries for municipal and government-managed buildings. Specific procurement, contract, access, and site requirements must be reviewed before accepting work.

Can you work on public buildings with flat roofs?

We have experience with multi-story flat-roof ice removal. Suitability depends on membrane condition, drains, access, and roof-specific requirements.

Can you provide insurance certificates?

Available liability insurance, workers' compensation, and bonding documentation can be supplied to commercial and public-sector customers as needed.

Are you registered as a federal government contractor?

Registration and procurement credentials should be confirmed directly with Ice Dam USA. This page does not claim a particular federal registration or certification.

Do public buildings need to close during removal?

Not necessarily. Appropriate outdoor areas may need to be restricted, and the facility must ensure that building occupants and visitors remain clear of hazards.

Do you provide 24-hour emergency service?

Emergency calls are accepted around the clock. Dispatch depends on crew availability and safe conditions; overnight work may be limited to addressing active leaks.

Will you remove all ice from the roof?

We generally prefer removing all affected ice, but the agreed scope, site conditions, and any applicable authorization determine the work performed.

Do you supply work photographs?

Yes. Before, during, and after photographs are provided upon completion.

Can you give a firm labor estimate?

No. Ice concealed under snow and changing temperatures make removal duration difficult to establish before work begins.
